Answer

Parvo is specific to dogs. Distemper is the cat version of parvo. Cats can not pass distemper to dogs, and dogs can not pass parvo to cats. So no need to worry ;)

Parvo? What do we do now?

I had 2 labs, one 9 and one 1. The puppy died today from what the vet said was parvo. How can I be sure that my other dog wont get it? And what about my nephew, can he catch it from the yard? Or even me and my family? Our cats? What other precautions do we need to take? I've already gone around the neighborhood to let people know that a stray dog, or something has carried the virus into our neighborhood. I also want to add that the older dog got the vaccine today. But what if it was already in his system? .

Aww, I am sorry about your one year old. :-( its hard when you cant even control it. Parvo is a very difficult disease to control. The thing is it could be in your back yard and you not even know it. From the experiences I have had with it, if your dog gets it, you know almost immediatly, usually with in 5-6 days but I am sure it could take longer. The change in mood, wont eat, slobbering, tired, diahrrea. It takes a toll on them. Although Parvo can be a death sentence for some dogs, about two years ago my mom actually nursed one of our puppies back to health from it, but it is seriously something that takes alot of work, they have to keep hydrated and fed-If I remember correctly she had an IV for him, but she tried not to use it so that it would make him stay somewhat active. The good news is, parvo usually attacks younger dogs first simply because their immune system is weaker. Although your 9 year old may be suseptibale to it, its better in a way that he is older. You have gotten the vaccine which was a big step, now you need to moniter him very closely. Since you have had him so long you probably will notice any change in behavior. The link below has lots of people who have delt with parvo, and can reccomend some other ways to handle it. Honestly I really believe that if he does get parvo he can survive but it is most definatly not easy. It also reccomends bleach to get rid of it, since it could be anywhere, your yard, front steps, doggie bed etc. Good Luck!

MY PUPPY 4 MONTH OLD PUPPY JUST DIED OF PARVO I HAVE AN 11 MONTH OLD DOG IN MY YARD TOOO HE HAS HIS PARVO SHOOT BUT CAN HEE STILL GET PARVO I HERD PARVO STAYS IN THE AREA FOR A LONG TIME IS THIS TRUE

Answer

Parvovirus is EVIL, but mainly to younger pups like your 4 month old and elderly dogs.. YES, your 11 month old will probably get it..But at 11 months, his immune system is well established to deal with it... I'm soooo sorry about your baby.. :-( When your other dog starts to show symptoms, you'll notice they aren't nearly as severe as they were with the baby...He'll be really sick for a few days, but he'll get over it rather quickly.. The upside ? Once a dog gets over parvo, their immune system won't let them get it again.. :-) A very high nutritional treat for a dog dealing with something like parvo is raw egg yolk (please discard the white) mixed with a tad bit of honey...And hydration is a must...Put a little bit of milk in his water if you have to to get him to drink.

my dog had 7 puppies...we didn't know we had parvo in the yard. we gave one puppy away but they hadn't had their shots yet. the rest of the puppies died from it. we kept our dog (mother) in side giving her the treatment the vet gave us and 7 years later she is healthy and hyper. (she is a wrot and lab mixed.) as for the one puppy the new owner got her shots...but couldn't keep her and gave her back but she is still alive and healthy too. so yeah i think she'll be just fine. good luck ....i want to be a vet....so i wish you well. from dog er to dog er

Could it be parvo? I dont think so?

Reform of a question; Someone said earlier that it could be parvo? Just today, my puppy has loose stools. It also had some pink stuff in it, and it smells awful. He also is pooting, and it smells awful! It was probably something he ate. Should i just wait a few days, and see if it goes back to normal? He just got a worm test 2 1/2 weeks ago, and it was negative, so it's not that. Well, it wasnt blood in the stool. It was just something pink. He just had his last set of shots/worm test 2 1/2 weeks ago, so he shouldnt have any problems.

He just had his last set of shots/worm test 2 1/2 weeks ago, so he shouldnt have any problems. He is acting pretty normal, we went and had a good an hour and 1/2 excersise today, and he did fine. He is eating, and playing with his toys. I think it's just that he ate something funny, because i find all sorts of stuff , that he gets into, that i didnt know was on the floor. I see if it passes though. I found this on a website Two forms of CPV have been identified: diarrhea syndrome and cardiac syndrome. Diarrhea syndrome, or enteritis, has an incubation period of five to fourteen days. Dogs with enteritis act like they are in extreme pain. Early symptoms are depression, loss of appetite, vomiting, high fever, and severe diarrhea. Feces can be either grayish or fluid and bloody. Rapid dehydration is a danger, and dogs may continue to vomit and have diarrhea until they die, usually three days after onset of symptoms. Others may recover without complications and have no long-term problems. Puppies can die suddenly of shock as early as two days into the illness. The second form of CPV is cardiac syndrome, or myocarditis, which can affect puppies under three months old. There is no diarrhea because the virus multiplies rapidly in muscle cells of the immature heart. Puppies may stop suckling and then collapse and die within minutes or days. No effective treatment is available for cardiac syndrome, and surviving puppies may have permanently damaged hearts. The initial diagnosis of CPV can usually be made by a veterinarian after observing the dog's symptoms; however, vomiting and diarrhea can be caused by a number of diseases. The rapid spread of illness in a group of dogs is another indication that CPV may be the culprit. A more definitive diagnosis of CPV can be made by testing feces for the virus, either at the veterinarian's office or through an outside laboratory. Treatment for CPV should be started immediately. Hospitalization is necessary, except in relatively mild cases. Dogs must be kept warm. Dehydration is treated by replacing electrolytes and fluids and controlling vomiting and diarrhea. Antibiotics are used to prevent secondary infections. No drug is yet available that will kill the virus. The easiest way to prevent CPV in adult dogs has been through annual vaccinations, although increasingly, veterinarians are recommending that vaccinations be administered every three years. Puppies need a series of booster shots, because of uncertainty about when maternal immunity wanes and the time the vaccine can provide puppies with their own immunity. This may be as early as six weeks of age or as late as fourteen weeks of age. If there is still a high level of maternal antibody present in the puppy, it will interfere with a vaccination. Veterinarians recommend that puppies get boosters every three weeks until they are sixteen weeks old, and they should be kept separate from unvaccinated dogs. Vaccinations given to puppies as well as adults also protect against other serious canine diseases like distemper, infectious hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, and coronavirus. Parvo vaccinations are usually required for participation in puppy obedience classes and for boarding your dog at kennels. A vaccination does not guarantee that your puppy will be safe from the virus, but it's good protective insurance. A parvo-infected dog can shed the virus in his feces, which makes him extremely contagious to other dogs. The following precautions will help prevent the spread of this disease. Keep the dog isolated from all other dogs for at least a month after recovery. Pick up all the dog's stools in your yard. Use chlorine bleach and water to clean food and water bowls. Wash the dog's bedding in bleach and hot water. Disinfect all areas that the dog has been in, including linoleum floors, crates, etc. If you have any other dogs who are two years old or younger, or who have not had parvo vaccinations, take them to your veterinarian immediately for a booster shot. Feed your dog a bland diet until he recovers. Reintroduce regular food slowly. A healthy puppy or adult dog should never be allowed contact with the feces of other dogs when walking or playing in public. Dispose of waste material properly and try to keep lawns, sidewalks, and street gutters clear of feces from neighborhood dogs. My dog doesnt have barely any of the symtoms. His stool isnt bloody or gray. He is still eating, and he My dog doesnt have barely any of the symtoms. His stool isnt bloody or gray. He is still eating, and he isnt depresed, he actually seems as happy as always. He also doesnt have, diharrea, vomiting, or high fever? He's 4 months old if that makes any difference.

Answer

Loose stool is not normal so take him to the vet to be checked. Even though he has been wormed this does not take care of all worms he could have giardia (there is a test for parvo and giardia). bring in a sample. make sure they take his temp (normal between 98-102). I am a vet tech and even though he is 4 months he can still get parvo. have you kept up on his puppy vax? Parvo can live in the ground for 2 years. Don't wait it may be too late!

Anyone's dog ever had Parvo?

I need know what to do before and after my dog comes home after Parvo.. My Baby Roxy is almost a year old and sadly I just learned that she has Parvo. At fist I thought she was just going into heat since it is about time for her to have her first. She started getting sick on Friday 9-12-08 and I took her to the vet first thing on Monday morning. She is in the hospital now and is doing much better. They have VERY high hopes in her making it. They wont be letting her go home until she is able to start eating and drinking on her own.

She is in the hospital now and is doing much better. They have VERY high hopes in her making it. They wont be letting her go home until she is able to start eating and drinking on her own. There will be a lot of steps I have to take before she comes home and even after. I was wanting to hear from someone that has had to deal with this before. I've read pretty much everything online but I really want to learn more from those that have had to deal with this before. Here are somethings I have questions about: Clean up: What are the best products to use to clean my house without bleach out all the colors. Also with their toys, what can I use to clean them without making my dogs sick from clean products or should i just get rid of them. And last how do I clean my yard; the vet told me I need to dig six inches every where she went to the bathroom but I have no idea where all she went to the bathroom since they said the first day or so you dont see really that many signs at all. Is there something else I can do besides dig up my whole yard or kill it?? Note: I'm willing to do what ever I need to, Im just wondering if there is a better way Can she come home and end up just getting it again? Should I have her stay some where else until she is stronger? Will she ever be herself again? I have another dog is it safe to have her around Roxy or even at my house even though her shots are up to date? What are some foods she can eat when she gets home? Is there anything I need to buy to make her life easier as she is recovering? If there is any other information that you want to tell me I would love to learn. I am so greatful that she is doing so well. Parvo is known for how painful and hurtful it can be. I've been told most dogs die within 72 hours. Roxy was doing great but today her heart gave out on her. I haven't been this sad since dad died.. I'm so lost right now.. She was amazing and it sux that Parvo took her so fast!

Answer

My first suggestion is dont get your hopes up TO high that your baby will make it through. I hope and pray that she does. But I had a pup with parvo way back and he did the hospital stay we did the cleaning and he got home he was weak and still sick...I spent 4 days hand feeding him . One day he was great!!! Took him out to the bathroom and suddenly..well... Anyway....the yard is the worst to try to sterilize and keep from having a repeat attack. I suggest just keeping her away from it all together. Learn to enjoy walks together etc. Im not positive as its been awhile but I think even with treatment they dont consider the yard entirely safe for at least 6 months.

thinking about getting a dog?

i recently had my puppy die of parvo. since then i have racked and bleached my yard every other day for a little over a week now. i have also bleached the inside of my home and disinfected or threw away any other items that may have got parvo on it. i really enjoy having the companionship and love of a dog so i was hoping to get a new addition to my family. about how long do i need to wait and what would be a safe age to get? it has been about 2 weeks now since the tragedy.

Answer

parvo lives in the enviroment for up to 2 years. dont get a small little puppy without ANY vaccines. i wouldnt trust just bleach. im sure there is still parvo in the yard. if you want a dog, get an older puppy. maybe a dog that has already had his/her 2nd vaccines. if you dont want to do that, make sure you take your dog every 3 weeks till he/she is 12 weeks of age for vaccs. dont take parvo lightly, it's a VERY contagious illness. but if i were you, i wouldnt get a puppy at all. i would get a young adult with full vaccines, and a dog, NOT from a breeder. some breeders dont really vaccinate there dogs, and if they do it's the dumb 7 in 1 vaccine that wont do anything for protection. if you do get a dog from a breeder, make sure he/she is over 8 weeks of age, and ask for a vaccine certificate.take your new pup to the vet asap and they will look over the vaccines to see when/if they were really given. if you have any other questions, just email me o, and remember, a vaccines (just like all vaccines) are not 100%. there is still a risk if you get a puppy (even if vaccinated) it can still get sick. and call a local vet, they can tell you a lot more than what i can type :)

Answer

Puppies have worms, they always do, always will. Clean up after her when she goes and use a sanitizer like bleach. Your dogs should not get the worms unless ingested. I believe hookworms can burrow into the skin, but it would be uncommon for that to happen. It is also best to have your personal dogs on a monthly wormer, which is usually included in most heartworm medications. I foster dogs, and most of them come to me with worms. Sometimes I do not clean up right away because i can't or i didn't know the dog went. My dogs have never contracted the worms but they are also on monthly wormers, (interceptor, heartguard) Your pup will need to be dewormed at least twice maybe three times.

Need more info.Have they had any shots ? Are their stools bloody, smelly, runny, ( sure signs of parvo). Are they inside or outside dogs? Just guessing with this limited info --- Try pepto bismol to ease their tummies. Then give them some chicken noodle soup or chicken and rice something light. Maybe a little pedoilite. for a few days so they don't dehydrate. You can also try boiled chicken or boiled hamburger. Hard to treat without knowing anymore facts. Could have ate a frog or lizard. Could be Parvo? How old are they ? Good luck

Not true. Those that have been successfully treated are normal happy dogs. Our vet here has treated many dogs with parvo. The trick is early detection and treatment....

Answer

I have had a dog that contracted parvo even when he was vaccinated against it. If he isn't drinking or eating, and is throwing up a lot and have bloody dire ahh that smells like a horrible metal smell, and losing weight then he could have parvo. It is extremely important to have the vet to a check for parvo. Dogs not treated for parvo can die within 7 days. I was luck and got the virus within the first stage of it and my dog was put in the vet hospital and treated for 7 days non-stop and he recovered, not all dogs are as lucky. Remember even with parvo dogs can still act like there is nothing wrong. There is usually a 7-14 day window period for the virus to take affect. Good Luck I wish you and your baby dog the best of luck. Please go and atleast have the test done. If the vet suspected parvo and he said just wait it out he's an idiot no offense to your vet.

Friend found dog with parvo, spend thousands to save dog, now owner are looking for dog. ?

Sorry the title of this question is kind of long, but my friend who has a big heart for animals, found a dying dog in the road, she took it to the vet and it did not have a chip or a collar. Turns out the dog had parvo, she also felt really bad for the dog and it was close to death, she then decided to spend about two thousand dollars in medical care for the dog, plus fees to keep it separated from her other dogs. The seems to be doing better, but about 2 weeks later my neighborhood is littered with lost dog posters, the description and the photo are identical to the dog.

Should i tell my friend? how will medical expenses be handled? Should I say nothing?

Answer

I would tell your friend. It's the right thing to do. In almost all locations, the owner would need to reimburse her the full amount of the vet expenses in order to reclaim the dog. If the dog was loose on the road with parvo, I would bet that the former owners won't have the $ to reimburse her and she would be legally entitled to keep the dog. She should consult the local police or sheriff's department to find out what laws specifically pertain to her situation so she knows her rights when contacting the owners.

Answer

Please do not think this response is rude. This puppy will die without vet care. Please try to find a vet quickly who will work with the money issue. If this is not available, please think about putting her to sleep. This is one of the most painful ways for pups to go. They literally shed the linings of their intestines. PLEASE do not let this pup suffer. You will not want to go through this at home either, I promise you. I am so sorry for you and your pup. Please be kind.......

parvo?????????????????

What is parvo in dogs?? and what does it do...just curious. .

What is parvo in dogs?? and what does it do...just curious.

Answer

Canine Parvovirus is an evil viral infection that will eat your pup from the inside out...It attacks the entire digestive system and eats away at the lining of the stomach and intestines so quickly that, literally, within 2 days of symptoms pup is pooping pure blood...The next day pup is pooping rancid blood because now the virus is actually rotting the digestive system as well.. Parvo is extremely contagious..It stays in the soil ready to attack another pup for up to 6 months...You can also pet a dog that has parvo and doesn't yet have any clear symptoms, and then pet your own pup, and within 7 days your pup will be dead without extreme veterinary intervention.. Day one, pup throws up a lot and has diahrea. Day two, pup refuses food and probably water and diahrea turns to blood. Day three, pup has such severe diahrea that he's become dehydrated..He refuses food and water..He's extremely dehydrated and lethargic...Very very sick. If he makes it to day 4 without vet care, he's very lucky to be alive...Without vet care at this point, he will lay there and die a very agonizing death......Parvo is evil. I used to be a breeder and have lost many pups and even in one instance, an entire litter to parvo.. I learned that here in the midwest it's best to start parvo shots at 4 1/2 weeks instead of the standard 6 weeks..Then shots every 10 days instead of the standard 2 weeks...Since implementing this practice, I haven't had one single case of parvo... ps, a little trivia.. In the late 80's, scientists traced the origin of the original parvovirus strain to a MUTATION OF THE FELINE LEUKEMIA VACCINE. I don't know about you, but that scares the BEJEEVIES out of me...Think of the implications, both animal and human.

My brother's puppy is sick.?

My brother went out of town this week and left his dogs with us. The older one is fine our house is like her 2nd home, but the younger one stopped eating the day after Jon left. So I took him to the vet tues. the vet tested for worms and parvo. Both negitive!!! and gave me a dog food with low amounts of grease for his stomach. But the problem is he wont eat. So my dad and I have to force him just so there is food in his stomach. Now it has gotten so bad that he wobbles when he walk and when he pees or poos he just sits in it like its to much of a bother to get up and all he want to do is sleep.

Jon comes back Sat. but I am calling the vet first thing in the morning. Does anybody have any idea what might be wrong with him. Do you think I am doing more harm than good force feeding him? I won't be force feeding him if I didn't have to. I have tried sitting down with him and feeding him slowly. he just turns his head away. I have tried three diffrent food in everyway imagainable. he just wont eat. Yes I have tried giveing him chicken he wont eat that either. I even chewed it for him lol He is up to date with his vaccinations so I don't think its distemper

Answer

I think you need to take the dog to the vet and have him care for it.He may need fluids.Force feeding is not bad he needs nutrition.Have you tried feeding him canned food or even chicken?Anything to get some protein in him.He may not be sick except for lack of food.

When should my puppy begin to show he is improving from having parvo?

My puppy began to act funny Sunday morning and by Sunday afternoon he was vomiting. Monday morning he had bloody diarrhea so we took him to the vet (he was in terrible shape). He has been on IV's, antibiotics, and vomiting/diarrhea medication since around noon on Monday. Yesterday the vet said that he thought he was getting better (raising his head some and his eyes were brighter) but today he said that he seemed to have gotten a little worse (not raising his head and his eyes weren't very bright. We are so worried about Axle. We just want him to get well!

We are so worried about Axle. We just want him to get well! Anyone ever had a puppy yo-yo like this and survive? How long does it typically take for a dog to begin showing improvements from having parvo with vet care? The vet hasn't told me that it is hard to tell if a puppy will survive - what is your experience? He has been sick for four days now - under vet care for 3 days. Any advice/answers is appreciated. My puppy is a 6 month old cock-a-tzu. He did have his first set of shots. I read somewhere on the internet that dogs that do not show a big improvement by the 4th day of treatment usually don't survive. Has anyone had a similar experience? Axle vomited twice yesterday and had one pinkish bowel movement. Today the vet told me that he had vomited and had diarrhea (more vomiting then diarrhea) but at the time I forgot to ask a specific number. My poor puppy didn't make it. He died today (6 days after symptoms presented and 5 days after 24/7 vet care). Axle will be missed.

Answer

Parvo is brutal, and it can (and does) kill a puppy very quickly. The fact that your little guy is hanging in there is a good sign, he's obviously a fighter! The 'yo-yo' effect you mention is very common, this virus attacks different organs and takes it's time to move on out of the body. Usually the worst phase lasts about 7 - 10 days. But even after that recovery takes quite a bit of time. Your pup will lose a lot of weight and be really weak, but if he survives the actual Parvo, he shouldn't have any long term after effects (except a lifetime immunity to the disease) and will get back to his old self given time. You did the right thing by taking him to your veterinarian. It's impossible to tell which puppies will live and which won't, it can be seem very random, but I think your puppy has a good chance. I wish you the best of luck and will say a prayer for him.

Dog pooping blood now throwing up?

PLEASE HELP!! I have a 1 year old chihuahua, Zoe. I took her to the Vet 2 days ago b/c she was pooping blood. The vet took her temp and said that it wasn't Parvo, it's just a stomach from something she ate that she wasn't suppose to. He gave her a shot and some amoxicillin that I gave her last nite, this morning and tonite. She won't eat or drink anything and she keeps throwing up. She threw up about 5 times today. I tried to force feed her some chicken broth with a dropper. She kept that down for a while. She threw up about 2 hrs after I gave her the chicken broth. She is very week and moans like she is in pain. I am very worried.

I really don't have the money to take her to the vet again. I hope someone can help. Thanks so much! Dana

Answer

Your pup needs a good vet. Chihuahuas can die very easily from lack of food, small dogs' blood sugar is very sensitive. It sounds like your pup has cocidiosis, a nasty protozoan infection. It is usually prescribed Albon suspension (for puppies) Any stomach ache fro tiny dogs or the very young is always dangerous. That vet is an ass! Try to get an eyedropper and give her some sugar water and get her to a good vet. You can sometimes give dogs Imodium to stop the diarrhea, but you need to eliminate the cause. Again, tiny dogs go down quick, so quick action is needed. Get well little one.

Can a dog with parvo yo-yo from a good day to a bad day and still survive?

My puppy has parvo. He was improving but today the vet told me that is worse than yesterday (not wanting to lift his head, etc). Yesterday he would lift his head a little to look at you. He had 2 vomits and 1 diarrhea yesterday and today they said that he has had both (more vomiting than diarrhea but they didn't tell me an exact number nor did I remember at the time to ask). Is parvo an up and down illness or could he be taking a turn for the worse? Any advice is appreciated.

my 14 month old puppy showed signs of parvo on Fri, 8th Aug 08, vomitting and had violent diarrhoea... we sent him in to be hospitalised immediately and he looked like he got better that he was even taken of the regular drip by tues, 12th Aug and the vet said he could leave within the next 2 days.. However he crashed the next day (Wed) and they found out that his marrow was being attacked and by then he was just lying there hardly moving and it was heartbreaking. We got him put on a plasma transfusion drip, started on a once a day interflureon jabs for 3 days.. and was back on the drip after the plasma tooc because he wasnt eating once again. by Sunday, 17th Aug he was almost back to his usual rowdy self. and he got well enough to be discharged on the 19th evening, 12 days after he was admitted. That was about US$3000 later. but i would say totally worth it to do everything we could to get him well again even tho we cant really afford that money. all these when we only got the puppy on the 3rd Aug night and barely had him for a week and it struck. u just have to be very vigilant to make sure the vetrinary staff are very alert and they give him the best care possible... even if its to a point of making such a fuss on things so that they hate you to the core but it keeps them on their toes to be vigilant about your pup. Hope these little info helps and keeps you encouraged.

There is a new strain of parvo going around, I think it is called parvo 2c, and nothing is working on it, and by the time you realize your dog has it, it is usually too late. Shots don't seem to be working on it. I am sorry about your puppy. You did the best you could, and Chico understands that.

Answer

Oh Dear! I would definitely call your vet! Usually when the dogs are older Parvo is not a big concern. Your dogs are not at high risk. But if the pup was in your home then your home is now contaminated with the parvo virus. This means you will have to clean your home from top to bottom with a bleach and water mixture of 50% bleach and 50% water to kill the virus in your home. Even with that I would not allow anyone who has an unvaccinated pup or dog into your home for quite some time. Parvo can live in the environment for up to a year sometimes longer. First thing to do is to call your vet and tell them what is going on. Then get to cleaning your home!

And he had really bad diarrhea. We took him to the vet and our vet said that he had PARVO. Now, i've had dogs all my life and i've never heard of the diesase. My neighbor whos a breeder didn't even know!!!! My vet acted like it was no big deal, but when I got home I jumped online to research it. The diesease sounds almost as bad as rabies! Once the adult dog is infected it has a 50/50 chance of surviving, and if it does live it will have health issues always. Puppies are at a more serious risk than adult and older dogs, and about 80% who have it will die. I was really upset, but we decided to give the dog back and demand a full refund. So, I guess my reason for posting this is to alert people about the diesease and also to be super careful and think twice before adopting. I'm also really mad that my vets and the company we adopted the dog from acted like this was no big deal, when it's highly contagious and deadly!!!! I won't post the name of the company for fear of being sued. Has anyone heard of this diesease before? If not, here's some of my sources: http://www.vetinfo4dogs.com/dparvo.html http://www.workingdogs.com/parvofaq.htm Also, does this situation sound farmiliar? Has anyone had similar problems? Why isn't this a big deal?!?!?! Thanks to everyone (except Nichole R.) for your stories and facts. I forgot to mention that i had also adopted 2 other dogs and i'm scared that they have this diesease so i spent a whole day bleaching everything. So what I did was smart. Nichole R. you are really dumb, because even if they do put the dog down, it won't suffer it's whole life and spread the diesease everywhere. The dog tested positive, therefore it has a 50/50 chance of surviving. I wish vets would treat this like they treat EIA(equine infectous anemia) in horses. Since it has no cure and hardly any prevention, if a horse has it and is reported must be euthanized or taken away and put into quarentine. I think they should do that in order to containe this disease. There you go Nichole R. I'm not sorry about what I did.

I'm really surprised that anyone involved in this would treat Parvo as 'no big deal'. As you found out, it IS a big deal, very contagious and more often than not deadly in puppies. It is unlikely to cause serious problems in older, vaccinated dogs but can literally wipe out a litter of little pups who haven't yet been given their shots. If you have any other dogs who haven't been vaccinated, it's very important that you watch them carefully for symptoms, and get them help immediately if they get sick. Animal rescue shelters and city pounds vaccinate their rescues against Parvo and the other common dog illnesses, but if a dog has been exposed PRIOR to the vaccination it won't be much help. I'm sorry that you went through the worry and heartbreak of dealing with this, but hope that it won't deter you from adopting in the future. So many dogs need a second chance. The links below contain a lot of information on dog illnesses, including Parvo, and all dog/puppy owners should be aware of what to look for in terms of symptoms. Immediate veterinary attention MAY save the life of a puppy with Parvo, without help they almost always die. Thanks for sharing your experiencing and alerting others to this problem.

My young dog suddenly died, why?

i had a 17 month old american foxhound mix(with what we don't know). I adopted her 3 months ago from the human society. She had three stomach parasites when i got her, i found out about a month and a half later, she was treated for them. Everyday for the last 10 days or so she would hop the fence and go play with my next door neighbors dog. She was happy, playful and completely normal. Yesterday morning, I got up at 7, and she was still in her crate.

I left her in there for a little bit, got her food ready, started coffee and went into the living room for something when i heard her banging around in her cage, i thought she was trying to tell me that she was ready to go outside. So i went to get her out and she couldnt stand. She had no muscle control. She was flopping like a fish trying to get out of her cage, so I helped her and tried to help her stand, she still couldnt. So i picked her up and carried her outside. I noticed she had a lot of foam in her mouth. That went away about twenty minutes later. She continued to flop over to the fence that borders my neighbor with the dog. I called my neighbor and she gave me the number to a 24 hour vet. They said it was probably a seizure and she would be back to normal within 45 minutes. This all started around 730 am. My neighbor came and got her around 830 and brought my dog over to her house so she could watch my dog while i went into work. I was gone 1 1/2 hours. I called her around 1045 and she told me that my dog was getting worse. She wasnt foaming but her tongue was hanging out(she couldnt keep it in her mouth), she still couldnt walk or stand, still no muscle control. I decided I would take her back to humane society. She didnt need to suffer anymore. So i got home around 11 from work, my neighbor and I got my dog in the back of my car. I sat back there with her to keep her calm. Her tongue was still hanging out, her eyes kept rolling back and what looked like an inner eyelid kept coming up over her eye. She was breathing really really heavy(like she had just ran around for hours) and she was really really warm, i was sweating just being next to her. The workers at the humane society came out to the car and got her and as they were carrying her in, she was pooping and didnt know it. She was put down(I didnt see it, i said my goodbyes to her while we were in the car and my bf was inside talking to them). She was perfectly healthy when i got up yesterday morning and about 20 minutes later she was dying. If anyone can tell me how, I greatly appreciate it, I have heard it sounds like parvo but i know thats not it. Thank you so much! please dont be cruel, i just lost my dog and I miss her. I loved her. I took good care of her too.

Sounds like it could have been an aneurysm like my dog had. I had a Plott Hound mix that had the same symptoms before he passed and he was only 3. We (us and the vet) had thought he was just eplieptic - as Hounds can have canine epilepsy) but they were seizures leading up to an aneurysm (we found out after his death) There is nothing you could have done and no way you could have known prior, so there is no need to beat yourself up over this. You did the best you could do. Sorry for your loss.................

Answer

when my dog got sick the vet suggested using a tiny amount of chicken broth on her dog food to soften it and add flavor. just make sure she is drinking water, and doesn't dehydrate.they can go weeks without food and live but only days without water before they die.

How contagious is PARVO???

I am 25. And I am house sitting for a sibling who owns a tiny dog (10-15 lbs) . . . . I am watching her because she is pregnant, due in about a week, and she is not able to get her parvo shot until she has them. The dog has left her own home, because there is a lab pup who has parvo and is currently being treated for it. Its towards the end of treatment and the pup is doing great, however, we were told we can't bring the other one back because the little dog will catch it ASAP?

SUMMARY: The pregnant dog will have her shots in about a week (after the new pups arrive) and then supposedly after all her parvo shots she can go back home. I guess the parvo is in the dirt etc? Thanks I am clueless about animals! Just trying to help the family and speed the process along : )

Parvo?? Please help save my dog!?

One dog has parvo. The other doesnt. The dog that doesnt have parvo went to stay with my sister. The dog that doesnt have parvo is pregnant (I am only 15. I realize my family is irrasponsible for not spaying our dog, or getting them shots=( Anyways, my older sister blew up at me, and said she hates pregnancy. She hates fleas. She hates animals. She is going to kill my dog, or drop her in a river. My parents dont care, and I am the only one that can help my dog. Where can my dog go?

I would contact the vet who diagnosed the dog that has Parvo, and see if they can offer any suggestions, such as someone who might do a "foster home" arrangement with you. If you cannot afford to pay them, maybe you could do some kind of work exchange with them. About the only alternative I can imagine is to keep the sick dog inside and the well dog outside, or in some way keep them isolated from each other. My sympathies on the state of your sibling and parental relationships. Your sister sounds like a real case!

Why are Vets so dang Expensive??? I thought they were compassionate people to be working with animals?

, but I was wrong, I have spend 2k on animals in the past 2 years, that didnt survive. one got attacked by a big dog, the vet had told me the first dog would be fine and in two days he died. I asked for at least 1/2 my money back and they said NO. (even though they assured me he was going to be fine)and the other hit by a car... They act as if we are supposed to have 600.00 right out of our purse to p ay their outrageous fees. or else they wont treat them.

For goodness sakes, we dont take our animals to the vet because we like to. We do it to save their lives, and prevent sickness to them.. I had to pay 1000.00 in vet bills this week alone, due to my dog getting "parvo" from the yard. That was almost a whole months worth of paycheck for me. I asked them if i could have 2 months to pay them off, even offering post dated checks, they said NO..I will take a post dated check for the balance in full within 2 weeks. It just hurts my heart to know people could be so selfish. Maybe thats why im NOT rich..I waive my fees to my clients at least once a day...What can we do to help this situation....???

I'm sorry for your bad time and I understand your frustration as the seeming unfairness of this whole situation. However, I think when you've had time to loose some of your anger you'll understand that being a vet is an occupation not a charity. Some vets are more expensive than others and I called around before settling on a vet to see what their fees are. I avoided them and have had a wonderful relationship with my vet for many years now. He has overhead costs such as office, equipment, salaries, medicines and foods and he is still always taking in the old and sickly animals his clients leave tied to his dumpster when they are tired of them. He also has a family of his own and all the costs that come with that. Mortgages, cars, clothes, medical insurance, his animals and even though he has all these obligations he still donates his time to the spay/neuter clinic that the aspca does every year and he has a small account set up for animals in grave need that he goes to whenever he can. He can not always do something for free or a reduced rate. Perhaps before the next time you require a vet you'll give a call around to price various services, vaccines and what not.
