When should my puppy begin to show he is improving from having parvo?

My puppy began to act funny Sunday morning and by Sunday afternoon he was vomiting. Monday morning he had bloody diarrhea so we took him to the vet (he was in terrible shape). He has been on IV's, antibiotics, and vomiting/diarrhea medication since around noon on Monday. Yesterday the vet said that he thought he was getting better (raising his head some and his eyes were brighter) but today he said that he seemed to have gotten a little worse (not raising his head and his eyes weren't very bright. We are so worried about Axle. We just want him to get well!

How long does it typically take for a dog to begin showing improvements from having parvo with vet care? The vet hasn't told me that it is hard to tell if a puppy will survive - what is your experience? He has been sick for four days now - under vet care for 3 days. Any advice/answers is appreciated. My puppy is a 6 month old cock-a-tzu. He did have his first set of shots. I read somewhere on the internet that dogs that do not show a big improvement by the 4th day of treatment usually don't survive. Has anyone had a similar experience? Axle vomited twice yesterday and had one pinkish bowel movement. Today the vet told me that he had vomited and had diarrhea (more vomiting then diarrhea) but at the time I forgot to ask a specific number. My poor puppy didn't make it. He died today (6 days after symptoms presented and 5 days after 24/7 vet care). Axle will be missed.

Parvo is brutal, and it can (and does) kill a puppy very quickly. The fact that your little guy is hanging in there is a good sign, he's obviously a fighter! The 'yo-yo' effect you mention is very common, this virus attacks different organs and takes it's time to move on out of the body. Usually the worst phase lasts about 7 - 10 days. But even after that recovery takes quite a bit of time. Your pup will lose a lot of weight and be really weak, but if he survives the actual Parvo, he shouldn't have any long term after effects (except a lifetime immunity to the disease) and will get back to his old self given time. You did the right thing by taking him to your veterinarian. It's impossible to tell which puppies will live and which won't, it can be seem very random, but I think your puppy has a good chance. I wish you the best of luck and will say a prayer for him.
