Can a dog get parvovirus, even if vaccinated?

I have a 7 month old Pomeranian puppy. Just this morning, he has had diahreah, and a VERY small amount of blood in his stool. He is still eating, drinking and running around. Could it be parvo? If not, what else do you think it might be?? Yes, going to take him to the vet, so there is no need to say that! If he's been fully vaccinated then it's much harder than if he were 7 weeks old and hadn't had time to build up the antibodies. However, did he eat something he shouldn't? Has he eaten any human food? Had a diet switch? The common signs of the intestinal form of Parvo Virus are severe vomiting and severe haemmorhagic (bloody) diarrhea. Anything is possible, it might be something as minor as gastroenteritis or even pancreatitis, especially if he was given ice cream - human ice cream - I've seen it happen. Not all blood in the stool is parvo virus. If he had parvo I would assume he'd be vomiting and lethargic and off his food. Good luck, might just be a very bad upset stomach from something he consumed. Hope he's ok.

This is possible! If your puppy"s immune system did not stimulate the vaccine enough to protect him.This could be from interfering maternal antibodies,vaccine its self,the dogs own immune system or genetics the most common reason is interfering maternal antibodies. Great you are taking to the vet this will tell you for sure if this vaccine took place and what else could be making your buddy feel sick and have a bad stool good luck.

Throwing up Lathargic Diarrea Death?

I got 4 puppies off of a friend of mine. Appearing to be healthy, parents appeared to be healthy. We gave them their first shots then they started getting sick. First the little boy (next to the runt) weighing about 2 lbs started throwing up and having loose stool. Then after about 24 hours he got better. Approx 3 days later the runt weighing 1.8 lbs got sick with the same sympthoms except his has worms in them the normal little worms and then these foot long worms. (they had been dewormed) He got better then the 2nd to the oldest got sick same sympthoms except she had bloody stool lathargic and no worms then unfortunitly death after only 17 hours from showing her first sympthoms.

We took 3 of them to the vet after the first passed away got them a antibiotic shot as well as a B12 shot i gave her IV's Pedylight and Nutra-Cal nothing worked after 30 hours she passed also. But with hers she stopped breathing approx 10 min before her heart stopped... Does these sympthoms sound familar to anyone. Do you know someone in the same situation our vet is speechless he said the first one too pass was Parvo the second was Worms yet they had the same foul spelling stool same sympthoms with one exception... Is this a new puppy virus that mutaits with each puppy? Someone please i need some answers i still have 2 other puppies (the ones who got it first and healed from it) at risk as well as 2 other adult dogs! Help Please!

Sounds like parvovirus. Antibiotics do not fight viruses. Please educate yourself thoroughly on this insidious disease to protect remaining/future pups/dogs. I would also look for a competent vet.

I should have been more clear on my question. Im sorry. I fully intend to take my puppy back and im sick with worry that he is with such stupid people. My concern is with the sick factor. They have only had him for 2 days so he could have contracted parvo or anything else becasuse he only has two shots. I have three other puppies to think of and i cant make them sick and risk their health. Most breeders wont even do that unless there is something wrong with the dog. But I am more than happy to give you a refund and it should not take that long to find a new owner. But I cant re sell him until I know for sure he is o.k because then I a responsible for his health.

Hi...I've been in similar situations a few times. I would say if the puppy has only been gone 2 days it would be extremely unlikely for it to have contracted any diseases. So I would just take it back as soon as possible so that these people do not decide to take matters into their own hands, but if it really is a concern to you then either say that they need to take the puppy to the vet to be checked before returning it or that you will deduct the vet costs out of their refunded money. They will probably want at least a portion of their money back upon the return of the puppy to you, so I would offer some amount at that time and then give them all of your contact information to help assure them you will refund them the amount agreed upon. Usually the chances of the dog surviving with home treatment is about 30 to 40% and the chances of survival at the hospital is about 80 to 90%. If he is improving already then i wouldnt worry. They usually get way worse before they start getting better. Continue what you are doing and if he continues to keep improving then you are out of the clear. It also depends on how sick the puppy was when you first took him in. If he was just starting to have problems when you took him then most likely he will recover pretty quick. When a virus attacks the body builds antibodies to that virus to defeat the affects of the virus. Since the dog survived Parvo that means his body has produced enough antibodies to kill out the virus. So he will no longer contagious. Like in a cold, which is a virus. If I meet you today, just because I had a cold last year does not mean I can give it to you today.

Most likely hood, I feel, is that she contracted Parvo whilst there the first time but the vets deny that she has Parvo having carried out blood and stool tests. We got her home yesterday and shes been drinking less and less.

I have given her some milk, which I know isnt particularly good for dogs but she hasn't had a drop of water since yeaterday. Any advice greatly recieved I've used a syringe and that seems to work well. Happy just to get her to take a small amount. Whilst she was at the vets she did have very bloody diarrhoea and was fighting a nasty infection which made her difficult to diagnose. She is likely to have to have a second operation to have the plate removed so is still a very poorly dog. Thank you for all the advice so far. I will certainly go and pick up some supplies tomorrow

As an ex pharmaceutical rep I know that many medicines and preparations including antibiotics work just as well on dogs as humans. I would suggest you try the re-hydrating products you can buy in the chemist such as 'Rehydrat' for a couple of days, they will help restore the important minerals your whippet has lost, until he recovers his natural thirst, if it doesn't return then it's back to the vet.

It sounds like she may have eaten something that isn't agreeing with her. If it does not pass within a few days take her to a vet. Make sure she has plenty of water so that she does not get dehydrated.

In a nutshell, the virus attacks the lymph nodes, intestines, and the bone marrow. What goes on inside the dog is the virus attacks the intestines severely. That causes septicemia, (blood poisoning caused by fecal matter going into the blood stream) also leading to death. It's very common down here in Georgia, I see it far to often. Sorry for the death of your pet.

Do most dogs with parvo survive under a vets care?

Since loosing my puppy, I have been doing a lot of reflecting about my whole experience. I feel like my vet didn't provide the best care possible for her. I went in willing to have her treated and they sent me home with her each night because they didn't have overnight accomdations. I feel that if she was given IV fluids versus subcutaneous fluids she may have survived, but because she inconveniently was sick on a weekend she didn't have a chance. I also paid for a year "puppy plan" the Monday before she got sick (she got sick Thursday) and now they won't refund the money.

They were the professionals and I trusted they knew what was best for her.

Yikes. Treating a parvo puppy with constant vet care gives them 80/20 chance of survival. You shouldn't have been able to take her home overnight, they need constant fluids, they need to be taken care of literally 24/7. They need fluids every 15-30 minutes and monitored constantly. Risk of dehydration is SO dangerous here. If you sleep overnight and don't care for her, that could have been the end of her. I am NOT saying this is your fault at all, the vet should have referred you to someone with 24 hour vet services because parvo is super serious and shouldat least be treated with constant IV fluids. The virus will take its course, pretty much all that can be done is to calm the stomach to prevent vomiting, and keep her well hydrated to help her body fight off the virus. Sorry to hear about your puppy, but I think your vet was neglectful in not referring you to a 24 hour clinic.

Please read up on Parvo first and see what your research finds in regards to stomach problems following the treatment for it. Several brands of food make sensitive stomach formula. They contain very simple ingredients and are easy for dogs to digest. Is this a puppy? Because then you have to be sure to get one with a good protein level for growth. I agree make him some boiled white rice with chicken (also boiled and chopped up). You can store that in the fridge for a few days. Warm it to room temp at least before serving, it is a shock to the stomach to give cold food. After a few days try to introduce the dry kibble by adding a little bit to the mixture of chicken and rice. Wellness makes Simple Solutions. your mom or you needs to call your vet and ask first, please! it's free to call , the vet is obligated to answer ALL your questions about your dog he treated for parvo. you really also should bring in a stool sample for the vet to check..your dog could be suffering from worms..but the vet check is the only way you can know. with the increasingly disease infested puppymills, the Back yard breeding, and overpopulation of unwanted dogs, diseases ARE on the rise. Also, like happened with humans, superviruses are seen in dogs now due to vets chronically prescribing antibiotics for every thing. so while when your mom was a kid, she probably never had to take her dog to the vet except for vaccines, it's a different health style for dogs today. i'd be very careful with a dog who recently had parvo. if a healthy dog just had one bout of diarrhea, sure you wouldn't be rushing to the vet. but parvo is serious and her immune system is low right now. and be careful because SOME Kaopectate contains asprin. unnecessary and possibly dangerous for your dog. pepto bismo would be better but the best is to just call your vet. ADD: DO NOT GIVE YOUR DOG SUGAR! i know you're not stupid, may i just recommend you check out a basic dog book?
