I have always been asking for one but he always said no. But the dog i showed him on the animal shelter website was in our house about two months ago. Let me explain. the jack russell terrier just arrived into our kitchen and just sat there but we couldn't keep him. He was a stray in our town for a while until he disappeared. He got taken by the dog warden. It is really awesome that you are getting a dog from a shelter, you are saving a wonderful life. Just be prepared that a dog is your responsibility. You need to be prepared for the good and the bad. This animal will be with you for the next 10-15 years of your life, think really hard about that. It will require money for food, toys, training classes, and especially vet care. But, it will require time, energy, and love, which it sounds to me like you are more than willing to give it. A dog is a big responsibility for anyone regardless of how old or young they are, so think really hard about it. Maybe its just because i'm pregnant that they're really getting on my nerves but sometimes I get so overwhelmed I don't know what to do. I have considered rehoming them many times but I do love them and care for them so much. I just don't know if i could really do that. They get into things. Rip up carpet. Jake breaks out of his crate when i'm not home and tears up stuff in the spare room. They've ripped up couch cushions, damaged walls. Buddy has Separation anxiety and I believe Jake does as well. My husband is deployed right now and I really don't think I can handle both dogs an a baby. At least not while my husband is gone. What should I do? oh and I only put them in the crates when i'm not home (which is rare because i'm a house wife) and I've started to make them sleep in there now because they have been barking at all hours of the night when I let them sleep with me. Thanks for all your answers. My dogs didn't just get separation anxiety when my husband left...they've always had it. Savannah is a westie and Penelope is a rat terrier. You have put some much time and money into your dogs, it would be a shame to give them a new home and I would make that my last resort. Have you considered obedience school. I don't know where you live but I'm sure there are alot of good ones in your area. Maybe Pet Smart could help you with some suggestion as well. Hang in there, you have alot going on in your life right now especially all the hormone changes being pregnant and I can identify with you as far as a husband being deployed. Mine was in the Marine Corp and he was gone all the time. Being a virus, they contain only DNA or RNA, and are not capable of reproducing unless they invade a cell. Once inside the cell they take over and force the cell to produce so many new virus particles that the cell eventually bursts, releasing these new virus particles into the bloodstream and tissues so they can invade other cells. The only thing that can stop this is the immune system. Viruses are the smallest of know living organisms, and can only be seen with special microscopes called scanning electron microscopes, that cost millions of dollars (ours is on order). The parvovirus is extremely small (the Latin word for small is parvo)- just 1 thimble full of stool can contain millions of virus particles. It is easy to see why contamination occurs so readily. Distractions or fear can make a dog bolt into traffic, another dog could provoke something and you would not be able to prevent a fight, the dog could just decide to not listen, etc - and you would be at fault for not leashing your dog. It's the law almost everywhere. It keeps your dog safe, it keeps other dogs safe, and keeps the public safe. I would defnitely get to the vet asap as dogs can become anaemic when they are bleeding internally and go downhill quickly. In the meantime keep your pup separated from your other dog, it is possible that whatever is causing the bleeding is contagious. Parvovirus is only one of many diseases that may cause internal bleeding. It is a possibility but unlikely in adult dogs, especially if they are up to date with vaccinations and healthy in all other respects. It is highly likely it is haemorrhagic gastro enteritis, symptoms include sudden onset of onset of bloody diarrhea in a previously healthy dog, vomiting, not eating, and listlessness are also seen. Shock can develop quickly without treatment. The exact cause of this is not known currently - there are lots of theories. Other causes include: Gastrointestinal ulcers Colitis Parvovirus Coronavirus Campylobacter sp (bacteria) Salmonella sp (bacteria) Clostridium sp (bacteria) Escherichia coli (bacteria) Leptospirosis Whipworms Hookworms Coccidiosis Giardiasis Warfarin (rat poison) toxicity Thromobocytopenia (low platelets) Gastrointestinal cancer Hypoadrenocorticism Also, make sure you thoroughly clean any areas your dog has defecated in, use bleach if possible. Keep up your dogs fluids, an electrolyte formula would be best if you can find one. Otherwise mix a few teaspoons into hot water so that it disolves then add it to the dogs drinking water. Let the vet that you take the sick dog to in the morning know that you also have a pup in the house. They will tell you if you need to take anymore steps, depending on what is causing the bloody diarrhea. It stands to reason that over-vaccinating can be just as harmful to your pet as under-vaccinating. That is what your doctor would do to ensure that you are properly inoculated, so that is why I argue for having the titers checked for your pet...they are part of the family too :) In addition, companies that manufacture the vaccines only run studies to verify that their product works until a certain date. They do not conduct extensive studies to verify how long (on average/individual results vary) it takes for the vaccination to no longer be effective; these types of studies are lengthy and expensive. For example the rabies vaccination is 'good' for 3 years because it has been verified by studies to certify it stable for 3 years, but is it good for 5 years? or 10 years? And the way the companies verify their claims is by what? You guessed it...checking the titers. On a side note, even though your dog is not aggressive you really should consider having him neutered for his health; you prevent the risk of testicular cancer. Also even though he is not 'running around' there is the always the possibility of an unplanned litter. It is definitely something you really should consider for the health of your dog as well as the peace of mind knowing that you are doing your part to help control the pet population. He does not need the Bordetella vaccine unless you are going to be boarding him or if it's required by a "doggie daycare" program. None of my dogs, ever were given the bordetella vaccine. Nor have my dogs even contracted "kennel cough" and I'm at dog shows on a regular basis. (I've had 2 dogs live to be 17 yo, I currently have a 4 yo dog) If you adopted your dog from a shelter or rescue, the dog should have already been vaccinated. When you adopted the dog, they should have given you proof of vaccines, including rabies. If your not sure, you need to contact the shelter or rescue organization. Vaccines are good for at least 3 years. If your dog already has been vaccinated by the rescue group, you do not need to redo the vaccines. By doubling up, it can compromise his immune system. All vaccines can have adverse effects. They have a change to weather and the limp thing could just he a sprain. Take a look at his gums if they are nice and pink or red he is hydrated it they are white or gray with a fowl oder it is most likely something in the upper Gi. He simply ate something that wasn't agreeing with him. A beagle is a good dog and last forever with almost no problems. I would have his shots checked to make sure they are up to date and have him wormed once more. NOT BY THE MOTHER! Canine parvovirus causes ulcerative enteritis and diarrhea in susceptible dogs. This diarrhea can be bloody and life threatening. The parvovirus has mutated several times since 1980. The most common strain today is CPV-2B. The high mortalities of the 1970s and 1980's have lessened due to effective vaccines. Still, some dogs continue to break with the disease and die despite vaccination. Dynamics Of The Disease Parvovirus is an extremely tough and resistant bug. The virus lives for long periods of time on floors, food containers and other household objects. Rugs are particularly difficult to sanitize. It is thought that household vermin such as cockroaches move the virus from place to place. The virus is both resistant to phenolic disinfectants and to heat. It can be inactivated, however, with ordinary household bleach used at a concentration of one part bleach to twenty parts water. Exposure to sunshine also kills the virus. For the bleach solution to work, any caked organic material must first be removed by washing. Although it takes one or two weeks for the dog to develop signs of disease, the virus is shed in the feces from the third day of exposure onward. This means that dogs that appear healthy can already be shedding the virus and contaminating the home. The Symptoms of Parvo Parvovirus disease is remarkable in that symptoms can vary from none at all to a fatal disease. Four factors govern the severity of the disease: age at exposure, the size of the virus dose, the presence of maternal antibody, and the breed of dog involved. Dogs receive transient maternal antibody from their mothers through their first milk or colostrum. This antibody gives the puppy resistance to the disease. Puppies that are housed in a parvo-filled environment rarely break with the disease until they reach 14-20 weeks of age. At that time their mother's immunity no longer protects them and they may die of the disease. Dogs over six month of age develop natural resistance to the effects of parvovirus. Many of these dogs show only transient diarrhea. By the time the dog reaches one or two years of age the disease can be so mild that it passes unnoticed by the owners. For unknown reasons, Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers and Pit Bull Terriers become more ill with this disease than other breeds. The most common form of parvovirus infection is a sudden (acute) inflammation of the small intestine or enteritis. This is characterized by depression, vomiting, diarrhea and profound dehydration. Bloody stools and a drop in white blood cell numbers are common. Some puppies die as soon as diarrhea occurs but many linger on for 4-6 days. Those that survive eight days usually recover. The lack of white blood cells and ulceration of the lining of the small intestine lead to secondary bacterial infections. There are many other virus and bacteria that can cause bloody diarrhea in dogs. This leads to misdiagnosis where not all cases of "Parvo" in puppies and adults are actually due to this virus. Diagnosis Although symptoms can be very suggestive of Parvo, true diagnosis requires an antibody test that detects the actual parvovirus in stool samples. The test is an ELISA test or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Early in the disease, this test can be negative. Virus isolation is possible but the procedure is quite expensive and rarely done. In practice, the presence of an acute hemorrhagic diarrhea is usually all that is required for a tentative diagnosis of parvovirus. Treatment Treatment of parvovirus is directed at correcting the life-threatening dehydration that accompanies the diarrhea with intravenous fluids (lactated ringers solution with bicarbonate). Ten to forty milliliters per pound is given initially and then a slow intravenous drip may stabilize these dogs. Once the initial dehydration is corrected, maintenance fluids can also be given subcutaneously. We also give medicines that relax intestinal spasms such as metoclopramide (Reglan, 0.1-0.25mg/lb three or four times a day) and trimethobenzamide (Tigan, 1.5mg/lb three times a day). Besides this, the dogs are placed on antibiotics to prevent secondary bacterial infection through the damaged small intestine (cephalothin, Keflin @ 5-15mg/pound given four times a day intramuscularly or intravenously). Early in the disease dogs may run a short period of fever. But puppies' temperatures often drop to subnormal a few days later. These dogs need additional sources of heat. It helps to sit with the dog, pet it and encourage its will to live. Many of the younger dogs have hookworm infestations that make the parvovirus disease more severe. As soon as these dogs can hold down liquids, I worm them with pyrantel pamoate (Strongid, Nemex, 2.5mg/pound). However, did he eat something he shouldn't? Has he eaten any human food? Had a diet switch? The common signs of the intestinal form of Parvo Virus are severe vomiting and severe haemmorhagic (bloody) diarrhea. Anything is possible, it might be something as minor as gastroenteritis or even pancreatitis, especially if he was given ice cream - human ice cream - I've seen it happen. Not all blood in the stool is parvo virus. If he had parvo I would assume he'd be vomiting and lethargic and off his food. Good luck, might just be a very bad upset stomach from something he consumed. If your puppy"s immune system did not stimulate the vaccine enough to protect him.This could be from interfering maternal antibodies,vaccine its self,the dogs own immune system or genetics the most common reason is interfering maternal antibodies. But with hers she stopped breathing approx 10 min before her heart stopped... Does these sympthoms sound familar to anyone. Do you know someone in the same situation our vet is speechless he said the first one too pass was Parvo the second was Worms yet they had the same foul spelling stool same sympthoms with one exception... Is this a new puppy virus that mutaits with each puppy? Someone please i need some answers i still have 2 other puppies (the ones who got it first and healed from it) at risk as well as 2 other adult dogs! I would say if the puppy has only been gone 2 days it would be extremely unlikely for it to have contracted any diseases. So I would just take it back as soon as possible so that these people do not decide to take matters into their own hands, but if it really is a concern to you then either say that they need to take the puppy to the vet to be checked before returning it or that you will deduct the vet costs out of their refunded money. They will probably want at least a portion of their money back upon the return of the puppy to you, so I would offer some amount at that time and then give them all of your contact information to help assure them you will refund them the amount agreed upon. If he is improving already then i wouldnt worry. They usually get way worse before they start getting better. Continue what you are doing and if he continues to keep improving then you are out of the clear. It also depends on how sick the puppy was when you first took him in. If he was just starting to have problems when you took him then most likely he will recover pretty quick. I have given her some milk, which I know isnt particularly good for dogs but she hasn't had a drop of water since yeaterday. Any advice greatly recieved I've used a syringe and that seems to work well. Happy just to get her to take a small amount. Whilst she was at the vets she did have very bloody diarrhoea and was fighting a nasty infection which made her difficult to diagnose. She is likely to have to have a second operation to have the plate removed so is still a very poorly dog. Thank you for all the advice so far. What goes on inside the dog is the virus attacks the intestines severely. That causes septicemia, (blood poisoning caused by fecal matter going into the blood stream) also leading to death. Treating a parvo puppy with constant vet care gives them 80/20 chance of survival. You shouldn't have been able to take her home overnight, they need constant fluids, they need to be taken care of literally 24/7. They need fluids every 15-30 minutes and monitored constantly. Risk of dehydration is SO dangerous here. If you sleep overnight and don't care for her, that could have been the end of her. I am NOT saying this is your fault at all, the vet should have referred you to someone with 24 hour vet services because parvo is super serious and shouldat least be treated with constant IV fluids. The virus will take its course, pretty much all that can be done is to calm the stomach to prevent vomiting, and keep her well hydrated to help her body fight off the virus. Several brands of food make sensitive stomach formula. They contain very simple ingredients and are easy for dogs to digest. Is this a puppy? Because then you have to be sure to get one with a good protein level for growth. I agree make him some boiled white rice with chicken (also boiled and chopped up). You can store that in the fridge for a few days. Warm it to room temp at least before serving, it is a shock to the stomach to give cold food. After a few days try to introduce the dry kibble by adding a little bit to the mixture of chicken and rice. Wellness makes Simple Solutions. Also, like happened with humans, superviruses are seen in dogs now due to vets chronically prescribing antibiotics for every thing. so while when your mom was a kid, she probably never had to take her dog to the vet except for vaccines, it's a different health style for dogs today. i'd be very careful with a dog who recently had parvo. if a healthy dog just had one bout of diarrhea, sure you wouldn't be rushing to the vet. but parvo is serious and her immune system is low right now. and be careful because SOME Kaopectate contains asprin. unnecessary and possibly dangerous for your dog. pepto bismo would be better but the best is to just call your vet. The outcome is no guaranty, but there's no guaranty when hospitalizing either. You MUST keep the dog hydrated!!! Dehydration is usually the cause for death rather than the actual virus itself. You should probably not offer any solid foods right now as this is only going to continue to irritate the lining of the stomach and intestines. Pedialyte is an excellent source for electrolites to help avoid dehydration. It may need to be given through an oral syringe if the dog refuses. Chicken broth is an alternative if you are completely unsuccessful with the Pedialyte. The salty flavor of the chicken broth is difficult for the dog to resist. I've tried using chicken bouillon cubes to make broth and I've also bought the broth in a can -- pre-made broth has worked better for me. Also, remember that your baby's tummy is very sensitive right now, gulping water or any substance is likely to induce vomiting, so you need to administer in small amounts but VERY frequently to give time for the tummy to settle down. There's a couple more things that are extremely important: ISOLATION and SANITATION! This is not only for the benefit of your baby, but others as well. Or maybe the puppy ate grass because it had worms. I hope your new puppy, is being vaccinated by your vet, on a regular schedule, don't let him go more than 3 weeks between vaccines, keep him warm , dry, and not under stress while he's young. The fluids really help these dogs pass the virus more quickly and you avoid any kind of stomach upset by administering the antibiotics through an IV. Sure, dehydration is a huge issue with parvo, but keeping your dog hydrated is only one reason we put a dog on fluids in the hospital. We need that virus to flush through and a dog will not drink as much as he needs to at home - plain and simple. Parvo can have long reaching effects throughout a dog's life. Even when he does survive, he often will have a more compromised immune system and that's something that doesn't go away. This is all the more reason why we want the recovery from parvo to be expedited and it's why these dogs are best hospitalized. So if there is any way you can do this, I would absolutely start now. As for the shot - your dog will be naturally immune so no further shots for parvo will be necessary. All risk, no gain. Once a dog is immune to a disease via vaccination or through getting the disease itself, the dog is immune. I went and saw the dog everyday and she was fine. 2 days befor i was supose to take her home she dint have Iv on her leg and it was fine. 2 days later I go pick her up and her leg is huge. Dont say ask the vet cause he isn't going to saw its his fault and im not saying it is. i just thought its wierd. I know that if you put the IV in wrong it can and will cause a similar reaction.
