ParvoPuppy Home Remedies and treatments?

Im not going too go over the whole story AGAIN! Took our male miniture foxy/silky terrior too the vet, He got a stick shoved up his end, And was diagnosed with parvo. Anyways we had 3 options ladida hes at home at the moment, and we are trying too keep him hydrated. Its been about 3 days that hes had the full on "lazing around/throwing up/runny poo". But only yesterday and today was he "Sleeping, not eating, Not playing and laying in his vomit". For the last 2 weeks he's been throwing up. Thought it may have been something he ate. He also pooped a hard poo 2 weeks ago with blood in it.

I dont think he's thrown up usually he has it all over his face if he does. I know that all dogs have a 50-50 chance at surviving parvo. and an 50-50 chance of surviving it with treatment too. ANYWAYS we are doing home care, trying too force feed him and keep him hydrated. Ive herd of herbal remedies that sometimes work Hes 18 weeks old, and i was wondering if theres anything i can get for him.?? (like tablets). for the next 2 days before we see the vet again. I live in aus QLD by the way. If anyone has any info that would be great. (Sorry for confusing question.. I didnt know how too explain it) vet set hydration COULD work thank you helena. Im just going by what my vet is saying. Vet was NOT opened yesterday, The vet was on call. Went into today sent us HOME, cos we didnt have $300 upfront. He hasnt been vacinated because the petshop owner didnt have the contacts of the last people who owned him and hadnt known if he was vacinated or not (obviously not). He obviously does have an interest in water an ice cubes cos hes drinking the damn things. I added that so dont go saying he doesnt is it your dog?. We are doing everything we can, vet asked us too go back in 2 days because HE WONT BE IN! gosh get your facts right before you blabber on.

If you HAVE to, then parvaid works wonders. If hes been sick for 2 weeks though, thats not right. I have worked with about 120 parvo pups in the last two years using parvaid, tons vitamin C, and pedialyte. About 10 have died. You really need to be in constant contact with somebody that has done it before though, many problems can arise doing it this way. Do not force feed him, if he hasn't eaten in a long time, a drop of karo syrup for his blood sugar or nutrical will be fine. A belly full of food will make it worse. He needs to be getting about 2ml of fluid per lb of body weight. You need pedialyte (unflavored), you need some vitamin C, and you should try some parvaid. There are lists online of where to find it near you. Just email me if you can, I can help walk you through it a little. I work with parvo pups all the time/walk people through it that have no choice but to do it at home.... ill give you my spammy email its natural_pet@yahoo.com

Dog hasn't eaten in 11 days.......?

He had parvo last year, at age 3, and just turned 4. Had "virus" and was hospitalized 7 weeks ago, recovered, his eye ruptured and was removed, had some appetite loss but was good for a week, then suddenly stopped eating. Has been surviving on NutriCal. Vet gave up, all blood tests are normal, ultrasound showed nothing. I can't afford endoscopies and biopsies, and mostly cant' bear watching him waste away. He is so stoic it is amazing. Has anyone been through something similar that may have any idea what his problem could be? I have confidence in this vet, as he is the one used by the rescue where I got Weston 6 months ago.

After the ultrasound this week, they suggested I take him to the local veterinary school, but it is way too expensive. They said they would probably do an endoscopy or biopsies. I just can't afford them. I am going to try the pumpkin and have started him on the antacid along with the appetite stimulant, as I have read a lot online about pancreatitis and ulcers in dogs. He is not dehydrated, we are monitoring that closely. Thank you all for your responses.

If you cannot do further testing, then it's best to keep him comfortable and when he gets overly lethargic, euthanize him humanely. I have no idea what it could be. Did the vet give you potential diagnoses?

New puppy!!! Afraid!?

So, I just bought a new pup. Since it's sunday, no vets are open to get him checked out. But we are taking him first thing tomorrow. We named him Buddy. He is a mini Dachshund. My question is, what all do they check when you bring them into the vet for the first checkup?? He is already started on his shots, he already got started on his distemper and parvo and stuff. But I'm worried about my present dog, and the new pup meeting until he is checked out. Should I be so worried??? I'm even using sanatizer before touching each pet?? Am I just being a freak about it?? Also, he did go potty outside just a bit ago.

Also, he did go potty outside just a bit ago. His poo was half solid, half runny. Should I be worried? I know runny/bloody poo is a sign of parvo. But there was no blood, just half runny and half solid. We are trying to feed him now, but the place we got his from said he was eating just fine. Should I be so worried, or am I goin overboard. Only nice answers please! I will choose best answer! Thanks!! Should I be too worried?? Should I let my dog and the new pup together, or wait until after the exam. They are in the same room, just not letting them close together. They want to greet and play. But we aren't allowing it yet thou.

Answer

Don't stress so much. your new puppy is fine around your other dog You should have them meet ASAP make sure you give EQUAL attention so your other dog doesn't get jealous but your other do is healthy so no need to keep them apart actually if you do your other dog might not get along so well with the new one If you can't wait for the vet, go to the local feed store and get the shot and give it yourself. I do it all the time and I am just a regular person( I breed my dacshund and give all the shots and wormer etc. Her poop is fine but you need to worm the little thing too. It is so nice that you care so much about your pets but your going to get sick yourself if you keep worrying! Best Wishes!!

On his first check up they will check his vitals. Weight, heart, eyes, ears, teeth feel his stomach etc. If your dog has its shots already there is no need to worry about the puppy passing bad things on to your first dog. So I think you can relax. If your other dog isn't UTD on his/her shots then I would keep the two seperated like you are. Since he is going to the vet tomorrow I wouldn't worry about the poo. When you first bring a puppy home they are stressed and can have runny poo for a little while. Just tell your vet about it and see what he thinks. If it lasts longer than a week take hime back to the vet. As you can tell from my default picture I too have a mini dachshund. (She is longhaired though.) Her name is Willow and when we brought her home she had runny poo for a week. Once she was used to her new home she stopped. I have some pointers for you as a fellow dachshund owner. I was afraid that willow would have an accident in my bed when I first got her so I made her sleep in her kennel at night. Although she cried I didn't let her out. After about 3 days she stopped crying, and it was the best thing I could have done, it made her potty training so much better because she didn't have a chance to potty in the house at night. I tell you this because my sister got a mini longhaired doxie this summer and she did not put him in his kennel at night. It was a big mistake. Even though she new how successful it was for me she didn't care, because the first night he cried a lot. So she let him out, and it ruined his night time kennel training. It caused him to have a ton of accidents at night, which is disgusting. So my advice is be very consistent, and don't give in to your new doxie if you are kennel training him. At night if he cries do not let him out or it will make the training a lot harder. Good luck with Buddy. i bet he is adorable! :)

You are concerned which is good. Note that any animal coming in will probably have some health concerns. Get the animal from a good source and ask a lot of questions and ask for proof of things like worming etc. One animal's illness is not a guarantee you present animal will get sick. A good immune system is the best defence. Certainly keep the new animal in a quarantine area within the house to start off with anyways. This helps both animals adjust a bit easier and puts the brakes on any communicable diseases that might be present before a vet has a look-see. Cautious is not a bad way to go.

Answer

Well any dog could spread it. You can get it spread from the tires of your car, if you were parked someplace contaminated. There is a parvo 2c going around, and treatments are not working well with it, so if you think your dog has parvo, rush it to the vet.

How long on average for treatment of Parvo in puppies.?

I have a 12 week old Boxer pup, got him two and half weeks ago. I was told he had his first 2 sets of shots so I went for his third on Monday but wanted to check him out first because he wasn't feeling well for two days. They said he had gardia and didn't give him shots. I went home and he didn't seem right to me so I took him back yesterday and had a parvo test. He's positive for that so I got an electrolyte solution for dogs and amoxicilian for him. He throws up every few hours but is still peeing and hasn't pooped since yesterday but he hasn't ate either so that's good.

He basically sleeps and throws up but I put the solution back in him right afterwards and every hour. Thanks. Just mentioning he has been throwing up since monday morning and it's Thursday night and I've been giving him the antibiotics, which is actually 2 kinds, and the electrolyte solution and he hasn't thrown up in almost 4 hours and before that it was 7 hours. He did have dark red diarrhea this morning. He has peed twice and drank almost half a cup of water from the bowl himself. He is showing improvement. He also wags his tail when my husband comes home from work and walk around every once in a while. My pup died of parvo- should breeder pay up?

I bought a pup from a breeder and although the pup seemed fine, turns out he had parvo. 6 days later, it died. Now when I bought the pup, it was verbally said that there were no refunds, but since I racked up a $600 vet bill, shouldnt the breeder at least give me back what I paid for the dog? The vet said that the pup must have picked it up from the mom. The breeder said that the mom has all her shots and he doesnt know where the pup got the parvo. He also told me when I picked it up that it had been de-wormed only and needed its shots.

He also told me when I picked it up that it had been de-wormed only and needed its shots. I didnt go right away, but 2 days later, it started showing signs of sickness. The vet said he couldnt give it the shots anymore because of his condition and only had him on IV fluids. What do you think I should do next? I only had the pup for 5 days!!! I just wanted to add, he was not a full time breeder. These were his pets and he allowed them to breed. They were pure breed, but he didnt register them and sold them at less than half the price of an akc. This is what made me get one from him, pup was $125 and an akc would have cost me over $300. So, yeah, I bought him to save money, but now I paid much more in vet bills and it died! He doesnt have any more pups and said I am the only one who has this problem.

Answer

If there was a verbal "no refunds" why would you expect the breeder to give you your money back? You knew the pup didn't have it's shots when you bought it, which means, you knew it wasn't protected from diseses, including parvo. The mother being vaccinated could not save the pup from having parvo. The pup could have very well gotten parvo while in the breeders care, but, parvo is usually shows symptoms very quickly, and rapidly progresses. So, within 2 days, it is possible the pup pick up parvo while you had him. ADD> Parvo is contracted when a pup comes into contact with urine or feces of another infected animal. Symptoms start within about a week after contraction.

My dog had bloody diarrhea, and now won't eat his food. Now he's doing something strange?

This past weekend, my dog had bloody diarrhea. Took him to the vet, and it was determined that he ate something from my recycle bin (foil or plastic perhaps) that was cutting him up and blocking progress (tested for parvo and it came back negative). He is on the mend now. The bounce is back in his step and no more bloody stool. But, now he's doing something strange and I'm having trouble interpreting it. When I give him his bowl of food, he's obviously interested and hungry. Then he sticks his nose in the bowl, sniffs, and then rubs his nose along side the outside edge of the bowl and floor.

When I give him his bowl of food, he's obviously interested and hungry. Then he sticks his nose in the bowl, sniffs, and then rubs his nose along side the outside edge of the bowl and floor. He repeats this several times and then just walks away from the food. I figured at first he was associating his old food with his diarrhea, so I switched to a wet food. He gobbled it down the first night, but since then, he does the same thing. Sniffs it, wipes his nose, again and again, and then walks away. He will eat treats, so it's not a question of a lack of appetite. Something else is going on. Anyone ever see a dog do this, and if so, possible reasons why? Thanks! :) I also tried to give him rice, which he has had before and loved. He did the same thing. Could it be the bowl itself? Thanks for the trolling comment, Rusty. Feel better now? **** He is pooping, but not as much as normal because he's not really eating much. He will eat food from my hand, but won't touch his usual dog food no matter what. Thanks for all the suggestions so far (minus the troll). I appreciate it :)

Answer

I would have this dog rechecked - and have them check his upper Gi tract and mouth as well. It sounds like there is still something wrong. If they send you home again, and say he's fine, get a second opinion, preferably at a large animal hospital.

Answer

If he already had parvo, he shouldn't be getting more parvo vaccines ever, for the rest of his life. And no, they can't get it twice. You should ask your vet if they'd like some blood from him. Dogs that contract parvo can use the antibodies in your dog's blood to help bolster their immune systems. Where I work, we pay around $100 for a liter of blood from dogs that have had parvo. (We see a lot of puppies at my clinic, so it's always good to have on hand.) Look for other sources. Did you change his food recently? Could he have eaten something he shouldn't have, like bugs, paint, ant spray, grapes? He could have an obstruction - say, a sock not passing through his intestines. Are there other symptoms: lethargy, increased urination, difficulty eliminating? If he doesn't get around to eating tomorrow night, take him in.

Is there anyway to get rid of parvo that is in the ground around where I live? and if so, how?

My daughter is 8yrs old and loves animals with all her heart, especially dogs. She cares for them better than any child or even most adults than I've ever seen. She has had two dogs in the last year, and gave them the best care anyone ever could. But we live in a mobile home park and there is parvo in the ground around our place, they both past away which almost destroyed her. She wants another one so bad, but we just cant take the chance of losin another one. The last one we bleached the yard very good twice, and it was 2 days away from its third and final shot.

It still died. Is there any way to get rid of it around here so we can give her another one?

Answer

This is very contagious this could be from food cloths carpets toys and ground cage this can survive in the grounds for 6-10 months,This virus is transmitted from place to place by feet hair of dogs and humans if on shoes. So what Iam saying is your dogs may have gotten out side but this may be in your home this is why the 2nd dog passed as well; Here is a site you should look at with alot of info and good at that this may help you understand more than a vet tells us. Sorry to hear about this loss. www.parvovirusbreakthroughs.com

Am I being cruel to my dog?

I have a year old boxer boy and a 8 week old boxer puppy. The 8 week old girl is still in the process of having vaccinations against parvo etc. I have not been taking my boxer male out for walks in the past week as there has been an outbreak of parvo just up the road on the pens. I dread my boy bringing it back on his feet and me not cleaning them properly and the puppy dying. The pup has her second injection tomorrow and we have a large fenced off back garden for dogs to play football in (which my boxer boy loves) what do you think? he really wants to go running .

I see what you are saying. But, remember, Parvo can just as easily be tracked in on your shoes. Or transferred to your yard by another animal. You are smart to be fearful, but you are also keeping both your dogs from being socialized and exercised. Can you bring the dogs to another neighborhood to walk them?

Check this link (Amber Technologies makes Parvaid): http://www.ambertech.com/distrib.php Looks like there are many distributors in TX -- but I don't know how close to you they may be. Parvaid typically costs around $50/bottle.

What are the chances my dog will come down with parvo?

I got a call from the humane society this morning informing me that my puppy's sister is in the hospital with parvo, and that often if one puppy has it, so does the entire litter. The other puppy's parvo broke Saturday night (it's Monday morning) and my puppy has not shown any signs (we have had her for ten days). I have read that parvo can incubate for up to 14 days, but does is usually show up before then? My puppie's sister was at the animal control center and then at the Humane society for several days after I adopted my puppy last Thursday, so is it likely she contracted after my puppy was adopted? She has had one of her three booster shots, the first one on the 15th, so about 2 weeks ago.

I have already called the vet who did not tell me to bring her in, I was hoping to find out, in other people's experience, if it is likely or unlikely that she has the virus.

Answer

They usually don't show any signs until 10 days after the exposure to it. And its not 100% that the rest of the litter will get it to be honest. I would keep an eye on the pup. Has the dog had its parvo shots yet? Thats something that needs to be taken care of. Puppies are very susceptible to parvo, more than an adult dog. I would take her to the vet and have the shot done and checked out to make sure she has not been exposed to it.

can i wash her clothing, shoes, ect. then put them in dryer and use heat to kill virus?

Answer

As stated in the previous answer, if your dog is vaccinated and not young then it is at lower risk. In addition, have her shower before being exposed to the dog or any area it is in or around. Yes wash and dry her clothes, if possible use hot water and bleach. Check out: http://www.sheltermedicine.com/portal/is_parvovirus_canine.shtml there is a lot of good info about Parvo prevention and sanitation.

Rice is fine and plain yogurt in moderation but yogurt might cause diorreah why not feed her pedigree chum puppy food its the best option and has all the nutrients she needs,if shes been subject to parvo its best not to mix food like this feed her puppy food and rice and chicken they are the best options.

Answer

Did the Dr test for Parvo? This sounds like an intestinal virus, but if it is not getting better, then an x-ray may be a good idea to rule out possible ingestion or Bloat( when the stomach actually flips causing the intestins to be closed off). Also, what did the Dr perscribe? Reglan, or Metronidizole?? It is also possible to get Giardia from drinking stagnant water. I think that regardless if you dog is not getting better then it is time to go back, dehydration happens quicker than you may think and even only for fluids, I would take him back.

My puppy ate some toy stuffing...?

...and vomited 4 times the first day. Diarhea twice. Hasnt eaten or drank on his own in 5 days now. Took him to my work (Operation Kindness) foir a Parvo test and the positive sign was barely visible, so I dont know if its yes or no. I give fluids at home by IV and he has had 3 antibiotic shots now. I give Nutrical so he gets something but wont make him vomit. He hasnt pooped in 2 days now, of course he hasnt eaten. I have no money for the vet, so I'm trying to do what I can. He doesnt do anything but lie there with eyes open.

If it is Parvo...what all does he need besides the fluids and penicillin? How long til he recovers if he does? How long can he go on NutriCal? Vomited stuffing 2-3 times...diarrhea looked like it had some in it. Need to find emergency vet in Dallas who will do payment plan.

Answer

My puppy did this. She swallowed the stuffing and it lodged in her intestines. She also had parvo, but she had a strong positive. The vet put her in isolation. She had IVs too. One med to speed up her stomach to pass the blockage. But her stomach needed to rest for the parvo. One week later, after a blood transfusion and everything, we lost her. My bill was over $2000. We should have taken the vets sugestion and put her down. Instead she suffered for a week. This combination is serious. Good luck.
